Fashion met Science at NYFW 2023
The Arctic Sea Ice collection story:
The Arctic Sea Ice garments are the result of a collaboration between us and award-winning Artist/Filmmaker Amy Lauren. This unique partnership weaves together Climate Science, Sustainable Practices in Fashion, Art, and Technology to construct environments of peace.
The Sea Ice Collection narrates the tale of the Arctic Ocean and its diminishing sea ice cover. Each fabric within the collection represents a distinct facet of textile sustainability and is adorned with crystalline structures depicting the annual cycles of growth and melt in Arctic sea ice.
Sea ice, a complex material comprising water, salt, and air, unfolds its story through crystalline structures that evolve in shape, texture, and size throughout the year. From fall freeze-up to winter growth and spring and summer melt, these changes impact sunlight penetration, light refraction, sea ice formation, melt processes, and the overall ecosystem's biological productivity and the global carbon cycle.
The Sea Ice Collection transcends mere clothing; it encapsulates tactile recollections, sensory impressions, and textural memories. It embodies the daily ritual of getting dressed, serving as a beautiful reminder of the existence of the Arctic Ocean. By allowing individuals to feel climate science rather than just read about it, the collection seamlessly weaves this knowledge into personal style and identity, showcasing that style is synonymous with sustainability.
Designed to seamlessly integrate into everyday life, the Arctic Sea Ice collection becomes a part of your wardrobe, whether dressing in the morning or evening. It serves as a poignant reminder of the precious gift of beauty from nature, a gift that has melted away and will never be present again. The Sea Ice Collection stands as the tangible, sensorial, and textural living proof of what has disappeared and the beauty that remains to be preserved.
